BIM Data Exchange Solution​

IFC MVD and Automated Validation of BIM Models

1) Automated Validation of Precast Concrete BIM Models

 

This project highlights that there is a lack of automated solution as well as an established process for evaluating correctness of BIM instance data and rule checking of BIM exchange models specially for IFCbased models in precast concrete domain.

The methodology used in this project includes analysis and identification of main BIM exchange models in the workflows of precast concrete projects, developed precast models as test cases using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) for the automated rule-checking of the models, and also evaluated automated validation process.

Results:

  • Established the methodology for automated validation of precast concrete exchange

  • models.

  • Developed collaboratively a validation tool based on IfcDoc

  • Published the results in papers and technical reports.

Results:

  • Identified exchange requirements for final steel detailing exchange process. 

  • Documented MVD in IFC specification.

  • Published guidelines for supporting standardized data exchange from steel detailing software application to the fabrication machines.

2) MVD Implementation and Open BIM Standard for Steel Structure

 

National BIM Standard proposes facilitating information exchanges through Model View Definitions (MVDs) but MVD needs to be implemented for each domain i.e. for the Structural Steel Industry based on processes and requirements of data transfer and sharing.

The methodology used in this project includes: established BIM standard based on IFC for supporting data exchange from steel detailing software to CNC fabrication to enhance productivity of cellular robotic fabrication and assembly. Also, developed an application for documenting research findings using IFC and for the automated validation of BIM models. In addition, worked collaboratively with software developer companies and industry partners including AISC representatives and fabricators to implement
final steel detailing export tool.
